What Is Pedodontics? It is the department that undertakes the protection and treatment of the permanent and milk teeth of children aged 0-12. Pedodontics, a word of Latin origin, means 'children's teeth'.
Who Is A Pedodontist? Individuals who have specialized in the Department of Pedodontics or received dentistal training from the faculties of dentistry are called 'pedodontists'.
Pedodontics specializes in eliminating the problems caused by caries, traumas or genetic factors from infancy, in the jaw and face area, in oral and dental health, and even in preventing problems that may occur in later ages.
Starting from 6-7 years until 13 the deciduous teeth (milk teeth) fall off replaced by permanent teeth. At this stage, a caries formed in deciduous teeth might effect permanent teeth and the treatment of these young permanent teeth differ from the ones belonging to a mature adult. These kinds of treatments require specialization. Therefore a pedodontist realizes an application protecting facial and dental development after infancy.
