What Is A Dental Prosthesis?

In case teeth are lost due to gum disease or tooth decay and no teeth is left behind then a full prosthesis has to be used. In order to fill in the extraction gaps and to compensate basic needs such as eating, drinking, speaking and esthetics, full prosthesis are applied. Nowadays full prostheses can’t find a wide application area due to increasing prevalence of implants.

The adaptation time for full dentures is considerably longer compared with implant supported dentures. Especially for people who have never used full prosthesis before, these can cause mental trauma creating an uncomfortable feeling in the mouth when they are first inserted. The adaptation time for the lower jaw prosthesis is considerably longer than the one for the upper jaw. The reason for this is the tongue which makes a negative effect for easy movement of the prosthesis. Patients wearing a full prosthesis have difficulty during speaking. They can feel a change in their tone as they speak out the words. Over time the patient will slowly adapt to issues concerning speaking and tongue movements. Especially patients who do not have any teeth experience great difficulties when they want to bite something with the front teeth because as they press the front part of the prosthesis the back side naturally moves and the prosthesis might be displaced.

Removal of the prosthesis at night relieves the oral mucosa, but it may lead to habitual loss with the prosthesis. When it is inserted again in the morning, it may create a feeling of excess in the mouth. Therefore it may be more adequate to remove it on certain days of the week. Full dentures, which are the most difficult to use and hard to get used to among removable prosthesis offer a more peaceful use with the help of implant support. By applying two to four implants to the upper jaw, the retention of the prosthesis is obtained. Two implants on the lower jaw are sufficient for the retention of the implant supported prosthesis. Depending on the density of the jawbone plus the length and diameter of the implant applied, the number of implants can be increased to four. Since the bone is softer, full prosthesis is recommended especially for the upper jaw.
